Some fixtures don’t need any introduction. No build-up. No context. The names alone do the talking. Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians is one of them. Rohit Sharma is also unlikely to return to action on Saturday.

If there is a single reason CSK fans are walking into Chepauk with any confidence tonight it is Sanju Samson. Sanju Samson has emerged as CSK’s standout performer this season with over 300 runs and two centuries to his name. He already scored a dominant 101 not out against MI in their first meeting this season at the Wankhede. Fresh off his Player of the Tournament heroics at the T20 World Cup he has carried that form seamlessly into IPL 2026 and is currently holding CSK’s season together almost single-handedly.
The surface at Chepauk should work in CSK’s favour tonight. Akeal Hosein’s deadly arm ball that swerves into right-handers proved lethal the last time these sides met. He bagged 4 for 17 to send MI crashing to their biggest defeat of the season. On a pitch that traditionally rewards spin and patience CSK’s bowling attack could be the decisive factor.
Why MI Cannot Be Written Off
Do not write Mumbai off just yet though. A batter carrying that kind of form is a dangerous proposition on any surface against any attack.
Then there is the quietly devastating weapon Mumbai have been deploying all season. AM Ghazanfar has taken 10 wickets in six innings at an average of 19.60 making him the second most effective specialist spinner in IPL 2026. His fizzing carrom ball has been a riddle most batters are yet to solve. A turning Chepauk surface will only give him more to work with.
Trent Boult also carries a strong record against both Samson and Gaikwad having dismissed Gaikwad three times in six IPL innings. If Boult swings it early under lights the CSK top order could find itself under pressure before the powerplay is done. Especially with Gaikwad still finding his form, this can prove perilous for the yellow captain.
History Sides With Yellow
Form matters but history carries its own weight in this fixture. CSK have won five of their last six matches against MI since 2023. The most recent chapter was especially emphatic. CSK thrashed MI by 103 runs in their first meeting of this season at the Wankhede on April 23. A defeat that heavy does not fade quickly from a dressing room.
