IPL 2026 Playoff Race: CSK, RR, and PBKS Battle for Final Spot

Five Teams. One Spot. The IPL 2026 Playoff Race Just Became Brutal.

The IPL 2026 points table changed dramatically after Chennai Super Kings lost to Lucknow Super Giants on Monday night. For weeks, CSK looked like the team timing its late-season surge perfectly. Now the defeat has reopened the race entirely. At the top, RCB and Gujarat Titans are almost through. Sunrisers Hyderabad, sitting on 14 points from 12 matches, remain strong favorites to qualify as well. That leaves one realistic playoff position still available. And five teams are mathematically alive for it. But not equally alive. Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings remain the genuine contenders. Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are still surviving on mathematics, but barely.

Rajasthan Royals: The Team With the Advantage

Among the chasing pack, Rajasthan Royals now sit in the strongest position. They have 12 points from only 11 games, meaning they still possess one extra opportunity compared to most teams around them. That matters enormously this late in the season. More importantly, RR’s batting ceiling may be the highest among all remaining contenders.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has looked unstoppable at times, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s emergence has added another explosive layer to their batting. Jofra Archer returning to rhythm has transformed the bowling attack too.

The issue remains consistency. RR can look like title contenders one night and completely lose control the next. But unlike some of the other teams in this race, they still carry momentum rather than pressure. That makes them slight favorites right now.

Punjab Kings: Hanging On After the Collapse

Punjab Kings should have already secured qualification by now. At one stage they looked like one of the best teams in IPL 2026, chasing impossible totals and playing fearless cricket. Then came the collapse. Five consecutive defeats have dragged PBKS back into danger despite them still sitting on 13 points. The batting that once looked fearless has started looking rushed under pressure, while the bowling attack continues struggling badly in the death overs.

The good news for Punjab is that they still control much of their fate. One strong win can immediately stabilize their position again. But momentum matters deeply in T20 cricket and right now PBKS look like a team desperately trying to stop panic from spreading.

CSK: Momentum Interrupted

CSK’s defeat to LSG could become one of the defining results of the season. A team that had won four of its previous five suddenly finds itself back under pressure with only 12 points from 12 matches. Their net run rate remains positive, but only narrowly. The concerns that disappeared during their winning streak returned quickly against Lucknow. The batting looked fragile again under pressure and the bowling lacked control at key moments.

Injuries also continue to haunt Chennai. Nathan Ellis, Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre and Jamie Overton have all struggled with fitness issues this season while MS Dhoni’s availability remains uncertain. Still, experience matters in playoff races and no team in this competition understands pressure situations better than CSK. That alone keeps them dangerous.

DC and KKR: Hope More Than Probability

Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are still alive officially. Realistically, both now require near-perfect finishes and major help from elsewhere. DC’s season has once again collapsed after a promising start. KL Rahul has produced one of the best batting seasons of his IPL career, but the team around him has failed repeatedly in key moments.

KKR’s late revival after Finn Allen’s arrival came too late to fully repair the damage from their disastrous first half of the tournament. At this stage, both sides are fighting probability more than opponents.

The Bottom Line

Rajasthan Royals have the extra game. Punjab Kings have the points advantage. Chennai Super Kings have the experience. Only one of them is likely to survive this race. And with the way IPL 2026 has unfolded so far, nobody should pretend they know how this story ends anymore.
